...............................................................................

Trichology may seem like a relatively new term to many people but it has been around for more than 100 years. Trichology is an area of Dermatology that deals specifically with scalp and hair problems. A Trichologist is a person who has been trained in the different areas of the scalp and hair and is able to diagnose, advise and treat conditions of the hair and scalp. Trichologist’s can also prescribe medicated and hair care products to treat many different problems. Trichologist’s have to undergo extensive training before being allowed to practice. Qualified Trichologist’s are registered with an organisation that regulates the practice of Trichology.

Why do I need to see a Trichologist?

...............................................................................

Every year black women spend enormous amounts of money on hair products only to find that they end up going round in circles with no results and no clear understanding of what their problem is and what caused it. The unique characteristics of black hair and the high levels of heat, chemicals and traction (pulling) in hair styling means that hair problems are commonly day to day experiences among black women making it even more essential to invest in proper hair care advice. If you are having a problem with your hair or your not sure how to look after it, it’s important that you seek advice as soon as possible to prevent your problem from getting worse.

What’s the difference between advice from a Trichologist and from a hairdresser?

...............................................................................

A hairdresser is able to give advice usually in the form of a consultation before they carry out a service but because their focus is more based on styling your hair they are not able to go as in depth as a Trichologist would. A Trichologist is a hair specialist and is concerned solely on the condition of your scalp and hair. They are not only able to give you indepth advice about your problem but are also able to
Carry out treatments to grow your hair and treat your scalpPrescribed medicated products and hair care products which have been Trichologically formulated.Assess your health in relation to your hair problemGive you advice on stress and nutritionRun tests on your hair to assess its condition Liaise with your GP to investigate any health problems Teach you how to care for your hair properly

A Trichologist will analyse your scalp and hair and tell you where you’re going wrong and how to put things right. Trichologist’s are also holistic in the way they practice so that all aspects of your health can be assessed to reach the right conclusion.

What's the difference between a Trichologist, Dermatologist?

...............................................................................

• The key differences between a Trichologist and Dermatologist are that a Dermatologist deals with more skin problems than anything else because this is what they are trained in where as a Trichologist will only treat scalp and hair problems and are therfore more experienced because we see far more scalp and hair problems on a daily basis.

• A Dermatologist is highly trained in skin problems whereas a trichologist is highly trained in scalp and hair problems such as all types of hair loss, scalp conditions and hair texture and quality issues.

• A Trichogist can give you an indepth consultation spending at least an hour with you. A Trichologist also has a holistic approach looking all of the reasons why you may have your problem such as health, diet and lifestyle. Trichologist is able to give you specific treatment for your hair loss problem which is often formulated in their clinic and tailored specifically to your needs.

The other problem is that GP may not have a good understanding of the needs of black skin and hair and will usually prescribe products more suited to Caucasian hair. The products often strip the hair of moisture.
